Background

Background Note

Philo T. Farnsworth was born in Beaver, Utah in 1906. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1925. In 1927 he demonstrated a working model of a television system. He invented a "dissector tube" (called the orthicon), which was similar to the iconoscope invented by V. K. Zworykin's. The orthicon is a means of dividing an image into particles whose light values and when transmitted, are capable of being restored to form a replica of the original image. In 1938 he became research director of the Farnsworth Television and Radio Corporation. Farnsworth died in 1971.
