Historical Note |
Two years after arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, Mormon settlers ventured South to settle the Sanpete Valley in 1849. Their first settlement in Manti was 120 miles South of Salt Lake City. The region attracted Scandinavian converts from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Arriving in the mid-1850s, first or second generation Scandinavians made up 80% of the population in the valley by 1870, and made up 94% of the population in Ephraim. The collection is largely made up of architectural studies of the region, which reflect modifications of Scandinavian architectural style in the Sanpete Valley. |
Biographical Note |
Thomas Robert Carter (born 1949) is a Professor of Architectural History and Director of the Graduate School of Architecture's Western Regional Architecture Program at the University of Utah. Professor Carter began his academic career by studying history as an undergraduate, but switched his major and earned his Bachelor's degree in folklore from Brown University. He continued his folklore studies, earning a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1984. Carter studies vernacular landscapes in the American West. |
Carter's studies led him to research and write about 19th century Mormon architecture in the Sanpete Valley. Carter challenged the assumption that Mormon architecture was spartan, austere and homogenous by arguing that the pioneers who made the harsh landscape their home utilized the materials in their environment and tried to make them affordably aesthetic. The immigrants that came to the valley carried with them their architectural traditions from home, evident in the structures still standing. Scandinavian and Georgian styles influenced housing construction in the valley. |
The collection includes Carter's research concerning the architectural traditions in the Sanpete Valley. The research informed his Ph.D. dissertation, "Building Zion: Folk Architecture in the Mormon Settlements of Utah's Sanpete Valley, 1849-1890" (Indiana University, 1984). Carter also published several articles in the Utah Historical Quarterly concerning the subject, and is now finishing a book entitled Faith and Good Works: Making the Mormon Landscape in Utah's Sanpete Valley. |
Carter has been with the Graduate School of Architecture since 1990. In 1996 he received the Paul Buchanan Prize from the Vernacular Architecture Forum, and as of April 2005, Carter is the president-elect of the Board of Directors of the Vernacular Architecture Forum. |
