Quantity:30.5 lin. ft. (61 boxes)
Abstract: Armand L. Mauss (Ph.D., Sociology, UC-Berkeley, 1970) was born in Salt Lake City but reared in California. After teaching several years in California secondary schools and community colleges, he moved with his wife Ruth and eight children first to Utah State University in Logan for a brief faculty appointment in Sociology, 1967-1969, and then to Washington State University for the remainder of his academic career (1969-1999). Active in scholarly societies for the social-scientific study of religion, he was editor (1989-1992) of the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion. He is the author or editor of five books and author or co-author of approximately 100 articles and reviews in scholarly journals. Most of these publications are not in the field of Mormon studies, but Armand is the author of The Angel and the Beehive: The Mormon Struggle with Assimilation (University of Illinois Press, 1994), winner of the Mormon History Association's Chipman Award in 1995 for best first book in Mormon Studies. With Lester E. Bush, he edited the collection of his and Bush's articles on the race issue, Neither White nor Black: Mormon Scholars Confront the Race Issue in a Universal Church (Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 1984). More recently he published All Abraham's Children: Changing Mormon Conceptions of Race and Lineage (University of Illinois Press, 2003), which is the product of four decades of thought and work, and winner of the 2004 Mormon History Association's Best Book Award. The bishops and wards listed on this roll were provided to Armand Mauss in 1967 by Ray L. White, then chief staff executive for the Presiding Bishop's Office. The list included all wards and their bishops lying between the state capitol and the point of the mountain to the south. The membership size of each ward was also provided, and each ward was assigned a sequence of numbers based on its membership size. Thus the first ward on the list was given the sequence of 1 through 300 (or whatever the ward size actually was), the second ward was given the next block of numbers (301 to whatever), etc., and so on to the end of the list (on the roll). Then a standard table of random numbers was consulted from a statistics textbook, and ten numbers were selected from that table. Each of the ten numbers, in turn, fell (respectively) within a block of numbers that had been assigned to one of the various wards (after discarding duplicate cases where more than one random number fell within the same ward block). These ten wards were then selected as the sample wards to receive the survey instruments (questionnaires). This process gave some assurance of a truly random selection of sample wards, and that each ward's chance of being selected in the sample would be dependent in part on its membership size (the bigger the membership, the greater the chance of being selected through one of the random numbers). Furthermore, after the wards were selected, they turned out to be distributed geographically around the Salt Lake Valley in about the same way as the valley population in general - that is, more heavily on the east bench and southern West Valley than in the city center or the older west side of the city. The 1967 sample of wards for the survey of Salt Lake City Mormons is thus claimed to be a random, probability sample.
